History of Company, and Principal
Having worked for Consulting Civil Engineers for most of his adult life, Leon Botha and his wife Karin founded their own company, Tri-Am Consulting cc, in the beginning of 2005. Based in Rustenburg, this husband and wife team of engineer and company administrator rendered their services to mostly mining, light-industrial and commercial companies, as well as other consulting engineering firms. During the 2009 to 2012 period, Mr Botha had contracted employment with R&H Rail during which time “own projects” were kept to a manageable work load. The Botha’s moved back to their home town of Newcastle at the end of 2012,while still acting as technical consultants on projects with R&H Rail. With all commitments towards R&H now completed, Tri-Am Consulting now has the sole objective of establishing themselves in the Newcastle for long-term service delivery to local industry.
With 30years’ experience in the civil engineering field, and 17 as a professional, Mr Botha has held the position of “Senior Civil/Structural Engineer” with R&H Railway Consultants for 4 years, and has been the “Branch Manager” of a consulting civil engineering company in Gaborone, Botswana for 5 years. As “Technical Consultant” he has had the privilege of working with some of South Africa’s leading specialists in their fields, like Mr Alan Parrock of ARQ Associates. Much skills and experience were gained by participation in numerous civil engineering projects of a wide variety, locally and abroad. Now home,Tri-Am Consulting endeavours to benefit the community and add value to the local civil engineering and building industry.

We are firm believers of using the right tools for the job – your job!
Much moneys have been spent on purchasing modernBIM-enabledAutoDESK and Prokon software, training courses, and keeping our software current by annual maintenance contracts, to ensure that we alwaysprovide you with the best technology and service,
• Civil-3D : for surveying, roads & rail design, platforms, storm water and sewer networks
• Revit (Architecture, MEP and Structures) : for modelling structures and buildings in 3D
• AS (Advance Steel) : for modelling steel structures and producing workshop drawings
• ROBOT and PROKON : for structural analysis and design to the latest Codes of Practice
• AutoPADDS : Prokon’s addition to Autocad, for detailing and scheduling reinforcing steel
• Civil Site Design : Running on Civil-3D; for the design of roads and municipal services
• AutoCAD : the industry standard CAD software for draughting
• Various other programs for geotechnical and hydraulic design applications
Still very useful to have, our older Knowledgebase, Civil Designersuite of software is particularly suited to South Africa for Surveying and the design of Municipal Services.
Offices and Equipment
We are centrally located in Newcastle, at 50 Paterson Street in the CBD.
Yes, our computers are fitted with very expensive Quadro graphics cards and our CPU’s are “water cooled”, literally – so that our 3D-models are manipulated seamlessly at highest turbo-speed. We have two A1-sized HP colour printers for drawings. A0-sized prints and copies are done at franchised printing services in town.
With our“2-second” Electronic Total Station and prism reflectors for long range readings, or by using the reflector-less laser ranging capacityin built-up environments, we are able to undertake a wide range of engineering and topographical surveying projects.
Range of coverage on projects
Wherever your project is situated.
For economy sake, we are better able to serve the greater Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal area, but we will gladly take on projects throughout South Africa and friendly countries abroad; Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, and the Congo (Brazzaville, not DRC)
Collaboration with Other Engineers on larger projects
In order to offer you the best service at affordable tariffs, we keep our over-head costs down by operating our company in the style of a “sole practitioner”. For larger volumes of work wehave agreements in place with partnering consultants to assist with an overflow when needed.
We will gladly participate in Joint Ventures with other consulting engineers on larger projects, or deliver a service in which our field of expertise may add benefit to projects. Should any of our projects require the contributions of other specialists (in or from out of town), these will be brought on-board whether by appointment form the client, or ourselves.
Since we have relocated our practice from Rustenburg, to our home town, Newcastle, we are back with many friends and piers in the industry, and will gladly work together with any.
Giving back to others, investing in our future
Where you are in life is the product of one’s skills, attitude, and hard work. But it also is the resultof being inspired and helped by others. Especially so, in the field of civil engineering; to grow, one needs exposure to diverseprojects and challenges, and to rub shoulders with those with skill and experience, to help and guide you. In sober and humble recognition; above all, we need the grace of God !
Having received much help ourselves during our years of growth, we are eager to share what we have with others, and to sow back into the lives and development of the new generation. Whether a parastatal organization, architects, other consulting engineers/quantity surveying firm, or a construction company, we would be happy to work together with you to create development opportunities for your technical staff.
A winner, helps others to win.
With skill comes responsibility, and therefore we are eager to participate in community upliftment enterprises. You are welcome to speak to us on this.
