With pre-stressed Echo slabs over the demolished building’s existing basement, the new double storey parking garage has a bridge slab connecting the upper level to the up-ramp of the adjacent building’s parking garage

The design of two modern double story office buildings in Tygervallei, Pretoria (founded on raft foundations)

48 Coral Street, Fourways. With internal bearing walls removed, core-drill holes were made in the 1st floor slab to fit angle & rail section shear connectors with steel beams, working in composite action with the concrete slab

For R&H Rail, as a 2nd phase to the field measurements & drawings, Mr Botha was the “Responsible Person” conducting the structural modelling & analysis, and upgrading designs of 5 bridges, for a heavier train service

Stand 72 Capital Hill Commercial Park, Midrand with 2100m² floor slabs and 753 m² mezzanine floor.

Additional 1st Floor slabs were added by use of composite steel beams and concrete with shear connectors

Employed by R&H Rail, a study was conducted of the tracked plant with circular rail at their Beeshoek and Khumani iron ore mines, with recommendations on remedial works. Due to the “bow wave effect”, the rail in front of the moving plant loads causes the rail to creeps forwards breaking rail fixtures and earth cables

With R&H Rail, Mr Botha was responsible for all geotechnical & civil work on Xstrata Coal's 8.1 km rail balloon

For R&H Rail, Mr Botha conducted the design of the concrete structure for the 800 ton coal dispensing tower

The longest bridge in Africa (3.67 km) constructed in the 1940's, spanning over the Zambezi river with 33x 80m spans and 7x 50m spans; measured, modeled by computer and design-checked for a proposed heavier train service, found suitable – an R&H Rail (Pty) Ltd project

At their plant in Beeshoek, deep seated consolidation of under rail track beams caused wheel-flange decay and track plinth failure, with the differentials between rails causing stress damages to moving stacker plant

Apart from a few maintenance issues, this landmark diamond sorting building was found to be structurally sound

Bashed by illegal, over-sized, road haul, it was found that one of the six pre-stressed M-beams of the bridge near Oggies in the Witbank district, was damaged beyond repair. It had to be replaced with new, with parts of the deck & parapet wall

Damaged again (after previous repairs) 5 openings in the deck slab were made to effect beam-flange repairs, working between webs. This time the owner extended the project to include for the lowering of the R545 road by 1.040m, and the design and erection of three Early Warning Height Restriction Structures – with success !

Mr Botha was responsible for the designs & drawings and liaison with the Mpumalanga Dept. of Public Works

AutoCAD Structural Detailing (ASD) was used to auto-generate a full set of workshop drawings from 3D-computer model

With R&H Rail, this project for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality required the design of a new drainage system around the buildings – to the municipal system, repair works of buildings and roofs, and structural repairs of the quarter-Olympic size indoor swimming pool. By testing the water streaming into drill-holes, it was found that the water mains were leaking requiring leaks to be repaired. The chlorinating plant & pumps had to be replaced, and the filter plant refurbished. The scope included the preparation of cost estimates, specifications for tender, construction supervision and management
